The Jem and the Holograms renaissance hit another major milestone today with the release of the newest reimagined single from Hasbro Pulse / HBIC Records, and this one features the Misfits are back, with the original voice of Pizzazz, Ellen Bernfeld aka Norma Human, stepping behind the mic.

In the discography of the original 1980s animated series, ｢Click Clash｣ was the first duet between the sugar-sweet Jem and the Holograms and their tough-as-nails rivals, The Misfits. The song was featured in the second episode of the series, Disaster, and helped establish the musical rivalry that became one of the defining ingredients of the show.

The fact that Bernfeld has returned to the property, joining Britta Phillips as Jem, is genuinely thrilling news for fans. The two women were responsible for an enormous portion of the vocal identity of the original series, which produced a staggering 151 songs across its run. Hearing their voices – still just as outrageous, fabulous, and larger-than-life as they did four decades ago – is a welcome piece of nostalgia this week.

Produced/programmed by Keeley Bumford, the song is very vaporwave synth-pop, bringing the magic of music from two of the animated world’s most iconic bands into the digital era. It took a few listens for me to really fall in love with it, but, like all of the reimagined releases before it, it’s a solid track. Very fun. Very outrageous. Very Jem.

With ｢Click Clash｣, 9 of the 15 songs featured in the first five episodes of Jem (also assembled into the 90-minute TV movie Jem: Truly Outrageous!), have now been reimagined. Hopefully, Bernfeld’s return is only the beginning, and we’ll eventually get the remaining six songs from those episodes, along with the rest of the Misfits’ gloriously chaotic catalog – as well as a new mix of the series theme song.
