What I love about the world of Japanese BL Dramas, and really the genre as a whole, is a certain sense of whimsy. Even the ones making critical social commentaries still have this other-worldly element. It’s one of the reasons I love to escape to them so much, and the series Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! is about as whimsical as they come.

On his thirtieth birthday, Adachi Kiyoshi (Eiji Akaso), an ordinarily adorable salaryman, discovers that he has acquired a strange and sensational superpower. He can read other people’s minds whenever he touches them. The reason why he suddenly has theses powers: He’s still a virgin.

Just when he’s starting to get the hang of it, he accidentally touches Kurosawa Yuichi (Keita Machida) and discovers that the handsome and popular Kurosawa has a crush on someone in their office.

Him.

Adachi finds himself in strange and uncharted territory when he realizes he realizes his own affection for Kurosawa and the two take a step into unknown territory that is confusing and even a little frightening for the adorable Adachi. But throughout the series twelve episodes Kurosawa proves himself to be not only the sweetest of men, but the living embodiment of a green flag, who just happens to be one of the most beautiful men alive.

He’s also a skilled fighter and a total badass who will F*ck up anyone who tries to hurt his Adachi.

Based on the manga of the same name Cherry Magic was released in 2020 as part of TV Tokyo’s MokuDra 25 programming block, and was a critical success. After two separate television specials (one focusing on the series side couple) Cherry Magic! The Movie was released!

Adachi is offered a promotional and the opportunity to open a new story in a new city. While he’s grateful for the opportunity he doesn’t want to leave Kurosawa behind. While he’s sad as well Kurosawa doesn’t want to hold Adachi back, so he tells him how wonderful he opportunity is going to be and how the two of them are going to be fine – which is was. Eventually – after Adachi’s near death experience.

Kurosawa rushes to his side and after a highly emotional day, the two finally get busy and Adachi effectively loses his powers. Becoming an ordinary every day 30 year old man… or not.

The film is a wonderful end to a wonderful series filled with color and happiness. While there are some dramatic moments, it’s a series that keeps itself lighthearted and fun. Both the series and the movie are available and can be ordered from retailers like CDJapan.
