To be honest I am not a fan of the hulk. I never read the comics, and to be honest, before Mark Ruffalo started portraying the character in the MCU… I didn’t really give a damn. However, I absolutely  ADORE Tatiana Maslany. She’s an incredibly versatile actress who can switch from sad and dramatic to light-hearted comedy to a raging psychopath in the blink of an eye – and she does it with ease.  So, when I heard that she had been cast as Jennifer Walters, In the new Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law I was ecstatic.

Tatiana Maslany in the She -HULK poster

The 37-minute pilot is everything I could’ve asked for. It was wonderfully written, fabulously funny, and honestly, just plain old comic-book-inspired fun.

The series starts with Jennifer preparing her closing arguments for a case with her best friend Niki (Ginger Gonzaga) a paralegal, and another generic-male lawyer who tries to convince Jen that he should be the one to do the closing arguments. It’s revealed that Niki knows she can “Hulk-out” but before the series can continue Jennifer turns to the camera, breaking the fourth wall to take you into her backstory.

I’m not a big fan of the starting in reverse form of storytelling, but series creator Jessica Gao has written such a fantastic pilot, that I didn’t mind it at all. In fact, I thought it was great! It wraps up the hows and whys into a simple and clean-cut package that doesn’t feel rushed, forced, or fluffy.

In a word, the pilot was perfect.

Maslany and Ruffalo as super-cousins Jennifer Walters and Bruce Banner

Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner was necessary but doesn’t overshadow Walters’ character. She’s the star.  Though Jameela Jamil’s Titania (another reason I am so excited for this series) only appeared for a brief moment, it was an important one.

Seriously, this series is great. So, stay tuned…
