Queer representation is growing and it’s a beautiful thing. From Oscar-winning films like Moonlight to television series like A League of Their Own. Grammy-winning artists like Lil Nas X and a plethora of other truly outrageous forms of entertainment. We’ve always been here and now, we’re finally being represented as such.

Then, earlier this year, something absolutely incredible happened. Superman, the most famous superhero of them all… came out.

In Superman: Son of Kal-El Jon Kent, (as the title suggest) the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane puts on his father’s suit and introduces the world to a new kind of Superman. Standing for truth, justice, and a better world, he also did something no other incarnation of the hero has done – he got himself a boyfriend.

Jon and Jay share their first kiss in Superman: Son of Kal-El issue #5

Though officially bisexual, Jon’s current love interest is a young man named Jay Nakamura, who, like Jon’s famous mother, is a reporter. The couple shared their first kiss in issue #5 of the series, which at the time, caused an uproar from the typical talking heads from the anti-gay sewers.

I’m not going to repeat or link to what they said because honestly, it doesn’t matter. They’re standing on the wrong side of history and will be remembered as such.

Besides, the series recently released its fourteenth issue, and in the 9 issues since their first kiss, Jon and Jay’s relationship is still going strong. As a grown gay man I am so excited to see the hero of all superheroes a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I can’t imagine what it must feel like for a teenager seeing himself represented the same way.

I couldn’t be happier.

You can pick up Superman: Son of Kal-El digitally and physically wherever comic books are sold. The second hardback volume will be released in November. You can pre-order it below.

Superman: Son of Kal-El is an ongoing series so, I’m sure I’ll have more to say once Vol. 2 is released.

Stay tuned…
