For better or worse AI has become an inescapable part of modern life. It designs websites, and layouts, writes our emails, recommends our music, and increasingly offers the kind of instant validation that human beings so desperately crave.

Chat Boy, the latest entry in the ambitious S DRAMA vertical shorts initiative through STARTO ENTERTAINMENT Is taking that conversation in a decidedly unexpected direction

Premiering worldwide on 1 August the series stars Yoshinori Masakado of Ae! group alongside Noel Kawashima of Travis Japan in what promises to be an intriguing blend of science fiction, social commentary, and heartfelt drama.

Masakado plays manga editor Utsumi, a charming and quick-witted manga editor, whose outward confidence conceals a far more complicated reality.  He’s become deeply dependent on AI chat services and the instant affirmation they provide.

However, after a sweeping government ban renders those tools illegal, desperation leads him toward a shadowy company specializing in humanoid artificial intelligence designed to circumvent the new restrictions. Things become more complicated when Utsumi discovers that one of the company’s AI models bears an uncanny resemblance to one of his high school classmates, Fujino (Kawashima).

In the beginning, the arrangement seems to offer a perfect balance between technology and companionship. Yet beneath its futuristic premise lies a surprisingly timeless question: can genuine friendship exist when one side of the relationship was specifically engineered to fulfill another person’s emotional needs?

The project marks another high-profile acting role for Masakado, who has built an impressive résumé spanning across television, film, and theatre, with standout appearances in the romantic drama Musashino Rondo and as Viola in a Japanese stage adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.

For Kawashima, Chat Boy represents the latest chapter in an increasingly diverse career. The multi-talented performer has balanced life as an idol with work as an author and stage actor, earning acclaim for productions including Knockin’ on Locked Door, A Better Tomorrow, and the theatrical phenomenon Endless SHOCK.

Beyond its star power, Chat Boy also highlights STARTO ENTERTAINMENT’s growing investment in storytelling. Launched in 2026, the S DRAMA label—short for “SPECIAL SHORTS”—reflects the reality of how audiences increasingly consume entertainment: vertically, on smartphones, and often in the quiet moments between the demands of everyday life.

The series joins an eclectic lineup that already includes MEMORY ACQUIRER, starring Koichi Domoto and timelesz member Taiki Shinozuka; All the pretty monsters, led by Shori Sato; and Fall in Love, Young Master, featuring A.B.C-Z’s Ryosuke Hashimoto.

Produced entirely in-house, the series spans genres ranging from psychological thrillers and horror to romance and comedy, all while embracing a format specifically designed for handheld screens. It is an ambitious experiment from one of Japan’s most influential entertainment companies, and one that feels uniquely suited to an era in which social media and streaming platforms increasingly shape the way stories are told.

Whether Chat Boy ultimately proves to be a cautionary tale about humanity’s relationship with artificial intelligence or simply an entertaining summer drama remains to be seen. Either way, the pairing of Yoshinori Masakado and Noel Kawashima—and the unsettling premise that brings them together—makes this one of the most intriguing entries in STARTO ENTERTAINMENT’s rapidly expanding digital universe.

There will be more STARTO ENTERTAINMENT news soon so…
