By the summer of 2021, Snow Man had easily established themselves as one of the most commercially dominant acts in modern J-pop. Yet rather than attempting to further amplify the explosive scale of earlier projects, the nine-member act took a surprisingly different approach with their fourth single, 『HELLO HELLO』, embracing warmth, romance, and playful charm instead. Bright, bubbly, and radiating with feel-good bubblegum energy, the song introduced a softer side to the group’s sound while continuing to showcase the effortless chemistry that had become one of their greatest strengths.

Perfectly capturing the sparkling excitement of first love through soft vocals, smooth production, and a pastel-soaked music video that evokes the dreamy romance of classic 1980s love songs, 「HELLO HELLO」 blossoms like a pastel-colored daydream drenched in the light of a golden afternoon. The video embraces the sparkling innocence of young romance with an almost intoxicating sweetness, while a subtle sense of nostalgia weaves throughout the visuals, recalling glossy love stories and soft-focus pop videos of decades past. Together, those elements capture the dizzying emotional rush of falling in love for the very first time and suddenly realizing the world looks brighter because of it.

Serving as the theme song for the romantic comedy feature film Honey Lemon Soda, starring group member Raul in his first leading role, the single marked the first time since Snow Man’s debut that one of their songs had been tied to a theatrical project headlined by one of the act’s own members (though group member Sakuma was a voice in the anime Black Clover). Based on the manga series of the same name, the film was released on 9 July 2021 and debuted at number four at the Japanese box office. Readers of  Modelpress later voted it the number one live-action film adaptation of the year, while a two-volume novelization further expanded the project’s popularity.

But it wasn’t the only one. The coupling track 「縁 -YUAN」 was also used as the theme to the Japanese dub of the animated feature White Snake: The Origin which featured the voice of group member Daisuke Sakuma as one of the lead characters, Yang Tianxiang. The song incorporates the traditional Chinese instrument, the erhu, which allows listeners to fully experience the sonic wonder of China.

Based on the Chinese folktale Legend of the White Snake, the film grossed over $64.5 million against a budget of $11.2 million inspiring multiple sequels.

Exploding with confidence, swagger, and playfulness, the coupling track 「YumYumYum ~SpicyGirl~」 delivers a wildly entertaining performance piece built around the razor-sharp choreography of group leader Hikaru Iwamoto. Flirtatious, chaotic, and ridiculous (in all the right ways), the track embraces its over-the-top personality with confidence, resulting in one of the group’s most delightfully unhinged additions to their catalog.

The title eventually approached the million-sales milestone while remaining inside the ranking’s top ten for six consecutive months, further cementing Snow Man as one of modern J-pop’s most formidable powerhouses.

There will be more Snow Man soon so…
