To many Sailor Moon fans, Jennifer Cihi is the voice that defined the magic, heartbreak, and moonlit destiny of the original English dub of the classic anime. Her luminous, electrifying vocals gave life to tracks like 「Carry On」, 「I Want Someone to Love」, and 「It’s a New Day」—songs that kept me awake through late-night study sessions and fueled the excitement of spontaneous drives with my friends. Even now, they remain in constant rotation on my writing playlists, continuing to inspire both me and the worlds I create.
So when it came time to shape the sonic heartbeat of My Super Fiancé, there was literally zero hesitation. Jennifer had to be one of the very first people I reached out to.
So I did.
We’d already been introduced through a mutual friend (cosplay and drag superstar Jimmy Sherfy) so it wasn’t like I randomly called her out of the blue, but still. I was excited she agreed to hear my proposal.
At first, I envisioned her stepping into the darkest corners of the shadows—lending her voice to the villain’s anthem, 「Queen of Chaos」—a slinky dark pop about lust, seduction, and being a truly killer beauty. However, fate had other ideas and after just one conversation, everything shifted. The darkness gave way to something far more powerful: a rebirth as we chose to reimagine what is perhaps the series’ most beloved anthem, 「The Power of Love」.
A song about the strength of friendship, self-confidence, and the unyielding force of love, it felt like a natural fit for the series as its English theme.
As we began working on the track, I had the opportunity to speak with Jennifer about her experiences with both the original recording and this reimagining.
“When I booked the original job, I didn’t know anything about Sailor Moon,” she recalled. “I had lived in Japan before, so I knew what anime was, but I wasn’t familiar with Sailor Moon—or just how popular she already was.”
“I recorded the first album (Sailor Moon: Songs from the Hit TV Series) in the home studio of one of the writers and producers,” she continued. “It was actually just like booking a session for a commercial or voiceover, with just me and the producer in the studio.”
“They definitely wanted me to sound very young and very poppy—and to sing the songs without any real ad-libs or deviations from the melody. It took several days to record everything, but it was a very fun and easy session.”
One of the more unexpected moments from that original soundtrack was the inclusion of the 1964 mega-hit 「I Wanna Hold Your Hand」.
“That was wild,” she laughed. “I didn’t really understand how it fit into the series at the time, but it was a lot of fun to record.”
“When I got your call, I thought this was a great idea and a really exciting opportunity to reimagine 「The Power of Love」 and bring it new life with an updated sound. It was very important to give the song a fresh flavor and a more current vibe.”

From the beginning, she had a clear vision of what she wanted to do. As wonderful as the original version is, it leans toward a simpler, more straightforward pop sensibility. Like Jen, I wanted something different—something bolder and more contemporary. A bit of Gaga, a touch of Dua Lipa, and, most importantly, the freedom for her to do what she does best: sing without restriction.
So I handed her the reins.
“The amazing and talented Jason Garner, our producer and engineer, helped bring this track to life,” she said. “He worked his magic so perfectly. We had so much fun in the studio, and we’re incredibly proud of the final result.”
As a creator, one of the hardest things to do is hand over control. But Jen and I had spent so much time discussing the project, and we were so aligned in our vision, that I trusted she would deliver exactly what I was hoping for.
And she did.
“The new energy of the song is so much fun,” she beamed. “To sing it again 30 years later—the way I originally wanted to record it back in the ’90s—is amazing. After performing it live in concert for so many years, I finally got to let loose and truly make it my own.”
Currently available on digital platforms worldwide, 「The Power of Love」 features both an album version and an extended cut—with more to come.
And when asked if she would consider reimagining another classic Sailor Moon track, her answer came without hesitation:
“「My Only Love」. Definitely. That would be my next choice.”
With a new set of episodes dropping in June who knows what will happen? But I will say this, there will be more My Super Fiancé soon so…
