Thai novelist MAME has created for herself an entire universe of characters and stories. What I love about her writing is that every single one of her stories are connected – even if it’s just for a split second.
the characters of Don’t Say No were introduced in the TharnType sequel series 7 Years in Love. Fiat (Chalongrat Novsamrong nicknamed First) is a young athlete with a sex addiction. Leo (Phachara Suansri, nicknamed Ja) is his best friend who’s been in love with him since they were children. But Fiat only sees him as a best friend, not a lover, and instead sleeps with anyone and everyone who will have him – which being as adorable as he is almost everyone.
When he meets Type (Kanawut Traipipattanapong nicknamed Gulf) he finds the first man who doesn’t want to bend him over any available surface. Seeing him as a challenge he tries to seduce Type, but Type only has eyes for Tharn (Suppasit Jongcheveevat nicknamed Mew) so all of Fiat’s advances fall flat. By the end of the series, Fiat finally decides to try to see Leo as more than a friend – leaving Tharn and Type in peace.
In Don’t Say No, Fiat and Leo navigate the ups and downs of their newfound relationship, including sex, family, and the appearance of old lovers who want nothing more than to watch LeoFiat go down in flames. But true love prevails and by the end of the series, the couple is stronger than ever.
The initial series was riveting. Fiat was the most hated character in TharnType, but throughout 12 episodes we watched him go from a broken little boy to a cool and confident young man, who knew who he was, what he wanted, and who he was going to let into his life.
Any actor worth their salt can make the audience love a character, but it takes someone with real skill to play a character so vile that you hate them with every fiber of your being. But then, from that hatred have you rooting for their success. First, is just such an actor. It was an absolute joy watching him run the gamut with Fiat. He’s incredibly talented.
The series has prompted two spin-offs Just Say Yes! Which follows Leo’s brother, Leon (Smart Chisanupong Paungmanee ), and Pob (Pongsapak Rachaporn, nicknamed James) after their miss-adventures in the Don’t Say No Special Episode. The second spin-off Past Love in the Future follows Fiat’s two best friends Aek (Chai Supakit Welasmongkonchai) and his twin brother Tho (Seng Supachkok Welasmongkonchai) in a supernatural time-travel story.
Leon also made a cameo in this year’s Love in the Air series.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again MAME really does have an ability to create a rich and wonderful world. I look forward to her upcoming projects.
More BL review soon, so…
