Hello BL Lovers!
I am absolutely loving the fact that 2022 has brought an abundance of supernatural stories to the BL genre. I’ve always been a fantasy of fantasy so to have these types of stories with queer characters has just been a lot of fun. Once Again is just such a series.
Since watching the first two episodes of this South Korean drama on the Viki app I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. It’s not the first time travel series I’ve seen, but it is one of the better ones.
In short: Jae Woo (Moon Ji Yong)finds himself stepping back in time to 2007 where he meets the man who was murdered saving his life from a child predator, when he was ten: Ji Hoon (Lee Hyun Jun). Since the incident, Jae Woo has blamed himself for Ji Hoon death as was someone he loved very much. Though it’s currently unclear exactly how Jae Woo was able to step back in time, the point of doing so is to allow him to get close to (and presumably, hopefully, save the life of) Ji Hoon.
A fun story with a talented cast, this series can only go two ways. 1.) Jae Woo succeeds and returns to his own time to find Ji Hoon alive and well as a forty-year-old. 2.) He must return to his timeline without Ji Hoon – which will break my heart.
I think the main reason this story resonates with me is that, well, who wouldn’t want the chance to go back to spend even one more day with someone we’ve loved and lost? I know I would. 100% – even if I knew eventually I’d have to come back to “reality” I would take any opportunity.
As far as the BL drama is concerned South Korea has been knocking them out of the park. With series like Semantic Error, Peach of Time, and First Love Again, they’ve got some of the most successful and well-rated stories in the game.
Once Again is uploaded in episodes of two every Wednesday. With only eight episodes (normal for South Korean series) it’s one of those bite-sized dramas that are 100% worthy of your time. In addition to Viki, the series can also be streamed on GagaOOLala
