I know the music video dropped back on May 2nd, but I intentionally held off on writing this review—I wanted to let the sound of the single speak for itself, without being swayed by the visuals (no matter how stunning they are).
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: one of my absolute favorite things about SixTONES is their musical synergy. Each member brings something unique to the table—when they take their solo lines, it’s like the lyrics were written by them or for them. They inhabit every note with purpose. But when all six come together? That’s where the real magic happens. It’s powerful. It’s emotional. It’s a harmony that hits you right in the chest. And it’s exactly why they stand as one of my favorite groups under STARTO.
「BOYZ」 exemplifies that to perfection.
Fast-paced and emotionally charged, the song blends gritty guitars, an adrenaline-laced rhythm, with the group’s powerhouse vocals into a battle cry for anyone fighting to claim their place in the world. It’s the perfect theme for the second season of the popular anime Windbreaker – which can be officially streamed on Crunchyroll.
Including 「BOYZ」 the Regular Edition consists of 4 tracks (and the 「BOYZ」 instrumental.
「Kaishingeki (怪進撃)」
– This track is a bit more sugary than I’m used to with SixTONES, but it’s got that late night summer-time-vibe and I really enjoy it.
「So What」
– This is a total dude-bro Anthem. Silly, fun, but still dripping with the sweat of a type of sex appeal only SixTONES can deliver.
「バリア (BARRIER) -Sweet Retro Soul Remix-」
– I love that they include these remixes on their singles. 「BARRIER」 is a fun song and this is a great remix.
The Limited Edition versions also include solo songs, which again, allows each one of the guys to really shine on their own. Limited Edition A also includes the 「BOYZ」 Music Video, a ‘Making of’ documentary and the dance only version
「憧憬のアーチ (SHOUKEI NO ARCH)」 · HOKUTO MATSUMURA
– Loosely translated to the Arch of Yearning, Hokuto delivers a poetic exploration of dreams, longing, and becoming. There’s an emotional undercurrent throughout, but it’s set to a driving beach-rock rhythm that lets his voice glide like a sea breeze at twilight—gentle, but full of purpose.
「にたものどうし (NITAMONODOUSHI)」 · YUGO KOCHI
– With 「Kindred Spirits」 Kochi paints the story of two people who, despite their quirks and differences, find unexpected harmony in one another. His vocals? Sweet, boyish, and just the right amount of wistful.
「虹、僕 (NIJI.BOKU)」 · JESSE
– Written by Jesse himself, 「Rainbow, Me」 is a lyrical meditation on individuality, fleeting beauty, and holding onto hope. It’s reflective without being heavy—his voice is soft, clear, and absolutely magnetic. If any track could bottle emotion, it’s this one. Also it just feels like a total ally song for this time of year!
Limited Edition B also comes with a documentary of their 「GOLD」 – which if you haven’t heard you should. It’s their best album to-date.
「Night rider」 · TAIGA KYOMOTO
– This could easily be the opening theme to your favorite late-night anime. With a gritty pulse and cinematic energy, Taiga takes us on a ride through a neon-lit city in search of meaning and light. Vocally sharp and emotionally resonant—he’s in his element.
「LIFE IS…」 · SHINTARO MORIMOTO
– Okay, full bias alert: Shintaro could sing a weather report and I’d swoon. But 「LIFE IS…」 is more than just a bop—it’s an 80s-infused love letter to life’s small, often overlooked moments. From stubbed toes to unexpected kindness, it reminds us that everything matters. His vocals? Bright, clear, and endlessly charming.
「No Cap」 · JURI TANAKA
– No lie. Tanaka drops fire with a rock-rap blend that’s 100% his lane. 「No Cap」 is raw, confident, and fiercely authentic. With bars like “I don’t act for the clout” and “Bands 目当てじゃねえ No Cap” (I’m not after money—No Cap), he reminds us that being real beats being rich.
In short this single is probably their best yet.
