Nicola Coughlan, is one of my absolute favorites! She first caught my attention with her role in the Channel 4 series Derry Girls (now streaming on Netflix for international viewers). Her wit, charm, and versatility as an actor were the main reasons I was drawn to Bridgerton, another masterpiece by Shonda Rhimes. Her portrayal of the Wallflower, Penelope, is a standout in the series.

This season, audiences really get to watch Pen come into her own. She changes her hair and clothing styles and stands up for what she wants for the first time in her life. The epitome of a glow-up, Penelope Featherington is not the little girl just wanting to make others happy. She wants to take that happiness for herself and doesn’t mind who minds. Along for the ride is her secret love, Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), who at first schools her in the ways of husband-hunting before realizing he (finally) loves her himself. Collin has also grown into a strapping (and quite hairy) young man.

But they’re not the only ones.

Other characters have also undergone significant changes. Actress Hannah Dodd has stepped into the role of Francesca Bridgerton this season, portraying her with an earnest innocence that is both whimsical and refreshing. Eloise (Claudia Jessie) has also grown, though it is out of her friendship with Penelope. However, she remains fiercely protective of her. Adjoa Andoh continues to shine as one of the brightest stars in the series, playing the  role of Lady Danbury, who has one of the sharpest tongues in television. Another one of my initial reasons for watching this series is Polly Walker, who brings the character of the ever-scheming Portia Featherington to life with a brilliances only Walker could.

With only the first four episodes of season three released (the remaining four to be dropped on 13 June), the series continues to deliver the same level of fun and engagement as before. The anticipation for what’s to come is palpable, making the wait for the next episodes all the more exciting. Bridgerton is a masterclass in entertainment, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the rest of the season!

More television reviews soon, so…
