With the members set and their skills sharpened, it was time for debut.
「Into the New World」 (다시 만난 세계) was unleashed on 2 August 2007 and the young women of Girls’ Generation become one of the pioneers of bringing K-pop into the American mainstream.

Distributed by SM Entertainment, the song was written in 2002 by Kenzie with lyrics penned by Kim Jeong-bae and was originally considered for the second album of M.I.L.K.. However, after the group disbanded in 2003, the track was shelved, left to sit quietly on some dark and lonely hard drive in an SM office, waiting patiently for the right voices to bring it to life. The song was released digitally first with a physical disc following a few days later on 5 August. In addition to the title track, two coupling songs were included, showing the emotional range of the original nine-member line-up.
- 「Into the New World」
- 「Beginning」
- 「Perfect for You」
- 「Into the New World」Instrumental
While the song wasn’t an immediate flash-and-sizzle success, there’s something undeniably powerful in its construction. Engineered for slow-burn ascension, the song has since become a phenomenon, earning its place in the cultural bloodstream. Structurally, it leans into bright synths and surging percussion, building toward a chorus that blooms rather than detonates, offering power without aggression, strength without fear, and most importantly, hope.
Over time, that hope found an audience far beyond the world of pop music.
Nine years after its release, 「Into the New World」 emerged as an unexpected protest anthem during the 2016 demonstrations at Ewha Womans University. It’s also become a staple durring Pride parades across South Korea, its chorus reinterpreted as a declaration of visibility and solidarity.
In 2019, the song was sung during pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, and the following year it echoed again through the streets of Thailand, where demonstrators adopted it during anti-government rallies.
In December 2024, Thousands gathered outside the National Assembly Building in Seoul, singing 「Into the New World」 during protests calling for the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol.
Responding to the footage circulating online, Yuri reflected on the moment, saying, “I saw videos of ‘Into the New World’ being sung loudly. It was incredible. I’ve been listening to it with you every day.”
On 14 December 2024, when South Korea’s parliament formally announced Yoon’s impeachment, the song once again rang through the crowd and across national television broadcasts. In the hours that followed, 「Into the New World」 surged to No. 1 on the real-time search chart of Melon.
Nearly two decades after nine young women first sang about a better tomorrow, the song is continuing to live on. It’s more than just a simple pop song – it’s a phenomenon – something people reach for when the need to rekindle that spark of hope.
For me, personally, it’s the perfect theme song for this new chapter in my life.
There will be more Girls’ Generation soon so…
