When it comes to the inspiration behind My Super Fiancé, one of the most obvious touchstones is Sailor Moon. A magical-girl classic—and an undeniable ’90s staple—the series, created by Naoko Takeuchi, taught an entire generation that heroism could coexist with romance, fashion, and femininity, and that some of our strongest bonds are formed not with the through found family.

Sailor Moon understands something essential: that love, vulnerability, glamour, and heroism don’t cancel one another out—they amplify each other. That a hero can cry, doubt themselves, embrace goofiness, and still rise when it matters most.

My Super Fiancé was built from that same emotional foundation, asking a simple question: what happens when love isn’t a subplot, but the source of a hero’s power?

To honor that influence, I made the decision to include a cover of one of the most powerful anthems from the original English dub of the series, ｢The Power of Love｣.

Written by Michael Benghiat, John Miyagi Author, and Evan Roberts the song replaced the song  ｢La Soldier｣ in the DiC English dub of episode 88 “Final Battle” which put Serena and the scouts against their most formative foe (at the time) The Wiseman (aka Death Phantom). It’s the perfect fight song, which is why I knew I wanted to include it in the soundtrack for My Super Fiancé.

I knew I didn’t want to create a simple one-to-one cover. What I wanted was something that honored the spirit of the original while allowing it to evolve for a modern audience. There was, however, one element I knew had to remain unchanged: the voice. So I reached out to Jennifer Cihi, the original singing voice behind the English dub of the crybaby, Serena and asked if she would be willing to return and reimagine the track. 

To my absolute excitement, she said yes.

Over the following months, we began shaping what the song could become, agreeing that it needed to feel current, joyful, and alive. I collaborated with several producers, exploring different interpretations—dance, rock, even touches of metal—but none quite captured the magic we were searching for. After the fourth attempt, and with neither of us fully satisfied, Jennifer suggested a producer she had worked with previously, Jason, and from the very first draft he submitted, I knew he was the right choice.

While the original version was delivered with peppy bubble-gum perfection, Jennifer’s return to the studio allowed her to bring a new level of strength and emotional weight to the vocals. She leaned into the power behind the song—and allowed herself to have fun with the freedom of knowing I trusted her implicitly. 

While Jen and Jason worked on the song, I reached out to UmiRage about the artwork, asking him to take inspiration from one of Sailor Moon’s most popular couple images, giving it a Prism City spin. 

The results of both are something I couldn’t be happier with.
