Man, it’s wild to think how far we’ve come since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Back then, BL dramas were a rare treat—you could easily catch up on every new release in a single weekend.

Now? There are almost too many to choose from. And honestly, with a few exceptions, GMMTV hasn’t been delivering the way it used to. My Golden Blood was cute (I’ll stan anything with Fluke Gawin), but Revamp: The Undead Story lost me after just two episodes. I’m enjoying My Magical Prophecy, though The Ex-Morning lost me around the same point.

That said, That Summer feels like it might turn the tide. It’s the first leading role for Thanawin Pholcharoenrat (Winny) and Kittiphop Sereevichayasawat (Satang), who completely stole my heart back in the 2022 series My School President(the same series that launched the GeminiFourth ship).

The story follows Lata (Winny), a troublemaker whose mother sends him to live with his young uncle Pheng—played by the devilishly handsome Tanutchai Wijitvongtong (Mond)—on a small island, where he’s immediately put to work. During a break with the village goofball Tum—expertly brought to life by Trai Nimtawat (Neo)—Lata discovers a body washed up on the shore.

He rushes the stranger to the local hospital, where the island’s dashing Dr. Wut (Phudtripart Bhudthonamocha, aka Ryu) diagnoses him with amnesia. Uncle Pheng, in a bid to screw with his lazy and entitled nephew quickly volunteers Lata to act as the young man’s caretaker. Lata names him Wave, and the two clash from the very start. What neither realizes is that Wave is actually Devin, the heir to a distant kingdom who fled in search of a “normal” life.

Okay, so it’s not the most original setup—but it’s fun, and the leads are absolutely magnetic. I can’t wait to see where the series goes next.

More BL reviews coming soon, so…

Stay tuned!
