I’ve followed Naniwa Danshi since their debut, and can honestly say that all seven of them—Daigo Nishihata (西畑大吾), Ryusei Onishi (大西流星), Shunsuke Michieda (道枝駿佑), Kyohei Takahashi (高橋恭平), Kento Nagao (長尾謙杜), Joichiro Fujiwara (藤原丈一郎), and Kazuya Ohashi (大橋和也)—have claimed a very special place in my heart. They’re my go-to whenever I need a sonic sugar rush, and they’ve never disappointed.

But not everything can stay rainbow-kisses-and-unicorn-stickers forever. Eventually, even J-pop idols have to grow up—and that’s exactly what Naniwa Danshi are doing as they step boldly into their ‘Seven Sexy Stars’ era. That evolution is beautifully showcased on their 4th double A-side CD single, 「ASYMMETRY (アシンメトリー) / Black Nightmare」, released on September 3, 2025, through Storm Labels as their 9th CD single (and 11th overall). It also marks their first release since their best—and boldest—album yet, 「BON BON VOYAGE」.

ASYMMETRY (アシンメトリー)

Serving as the theme for TV Asahi’s Oshidora Saturday drama Revenge Spy, starring Naniwa’s fearless (and absolutely adorable) leader Ohashi, this track is a sensual fever dream—layered with pulsing beats and a delicious air of mystery. It oozes sophistication and sex appeal while still capturing that signature Naniwa spark.

Black Nightmare

As the theme for KTV×FOD’s supernatural drama LAUNDERING, featuring the group’s comedic charmer Joichiro Fujiwara, this song shifts gears into darker territory. With hypnotic rhythms, venom-laced lyrics, and an electro-hip-hop swagger, it’s sleek, sultry, and undeniably one of their sexiest releases to date. The difficulty Fujiwara admitted in recording it only makes sense—it demands precision and attitude, and the result is absolutely addictive.

Hirahira × Tokimeki

This one feels the closest to the “classic” Naniwa sound. Translating loosely to Fluttering Heartbeat, it radiates youthful vibrance and innocence. Takahashi’s voice, in particular, shines here—not just showing growth as a performer, but fitting the song’s bright tone like a glove.

変わらないもの。

Loosely translating to Some Things Never Change, this track carries a wistful, reflective energy. There’s a Taylor Swift 1989 vibe running through it—polished pop with an undercurrent of nostalgia—and it’s hard not to love.

One-room Christmas (ワンルーム・クリスマス)」

If you know me, you know it’s never too early for a Christmas song—and Naniwa delivered my first of 2025. It’s got a breezy, retro-rock feel that wouldn’t be out of place in the ‘60s, complete with a warmth that feels tailor-made for Takahashi’s tone.

IZAYOI MOON (十六夜MOON)」

Closing out the set is 「IZAYOI MOON」, a track steeped in elegance and nocturnal beauty. Its lyrics paint a picture of longing beneath the soft glow of the moon, carried by melodies that are both haunting and tender. The arrangement gives every member space to shine, weaving their voices together like shifting moonlight and shadow. It’s a song that lingers long after it ends—romantic, mysterious, and the perfect reminder of just how versatile Naniwa Danshi have become.

With their expert balance of sensuality, nostalgia, and emotional depth, Naniwa Danshi have shown that they are idols embracing the evolution of sound. I love watching them as they enter this new chapter with such confidence, and can’t wait to see where they go next – which includes their first DOME tour next year!

There will be more Naniwa Danshi soon so….

Stay Tuned!
