Back in the ’80s, Jem and the Holograms was the most radical thing since vinyl—pure glam rock rebellion wrapped in glitter. With her cotton-candy pink hair, high-tech earrings, and the voice of an angel, Jem wasn’t just a cartoon character—she was a revolution.
Created by Hasbro and developed by the brilliant Christy Marx, Jem wasn’t your typical Saturday morning sparkle-fest—it was a full-blown electric pop-opera that dared to go deeper. Beneath the glam and glitz was a series unafraid to tackle weighty themes like identity, grief, corporate sabotage, and social justice—topics far beyond the average child’s comprehension at the time. And let’s not forget the music. The music was incredible.

Born in an era ruled by neon eyeliner, shoulder pads, and the almighty music video, Jem channeled the high-voltage chaos of MTV’s golden age into a full-spectrum explosion of synthpop, new wave, and unapologetic girl power.
Thanks to the cassette tapes that were sold alongside the wildly successful doll line, Jem went triple platinum. It’s one of the only animated franchises in history to hit that kind of musical milestone – and as a result the music remains as one of the series’ most enduring qualities.
Now, in celebration of Jem’s 40th anniversary, Hasbro has brought back the one and only Britta Phillips—the original voice behind that pink-powered vocal magic—back into the studio to re-record six of the most iconic tracks, including the immortal theme song.
“My audition was the theme song,” Phillips has recalled. But when she showed up to record, she had a cold. Still, it only took one take to land the job—and that very demo, cold and all, became the official version used on every tape and throughout the first season of the series
But this isn’t just a reprise—it’s a revival. “I was thrilled to be asked to sing these songs again,” Britta told Billboard. “I had listened to and sung many Jem songs at Jemcon last year, so they were very fresh in my mind. And I’m so excited for the Jem fans to hear them.”
The new take on 「Truly Outrageous」 is exactly that—truly outrageous. With a shimmering vaporwave sheen, it’s catchy, campy, and cool in a way that feels both nostalgic and completely fresh.
「Only the Beginning」—technically the first song Jem and the Holograms ever performed—still hits like a glitter cannon blast of girl-boss energy.
「Like A Dream」 glides in like the prom-night slow dance you always wanted, dipped in stardust.
「I Got My Eye On You」 comes in a little lower and a lot more sultry this time around—giving us flirtation with just the right amount of bite.
And then there’s 「She’s Got the Power」—my absolute favorite track on the album. Engineering? Flawless. Production? Perfect,. The vocals? Fire.
What makes the release even better is that for the first time ever, the original soundtrack is available on streaming—fully remastered, truly outrageous, and fully fabulous. These aren’t just songs from a cartoon—they’re sparkling synth-pop time capsules that helped shape a generation. With a variety of vinyl releases and digital versions now live, a whole new wave of fans can fall in love with the music that once nearly knocked Barbie off her pedestal. Jem isn’t just back—she’s better. And she’s never sounded so good.
You can buy physical versions of the vinyl through most online retailers, including Amazon – and it’s also available on streaming / download platforms worldwide, including Qobuz which offers a Hi-Res 24-Bit/48 kHz stereo download.
There will be more music reviews soon so…
