If you’re feeling brave – or want to indulge in a good cry – here’s some bittersweet news you might find interesting: the soul-crushing Studio Ghibli classic, Grave of the Fireflies, is now streaming on Netflix.

Released in 1988, Grave of the Fireflies is critically acclaimed and ranked as one of the greatest war films of all time. Based on the autobiographical short story by Akiyuki Nosaka, the film tells the heartbreaking journey of two orphaned siblings struggling to survive in the aftermath of the 1945 firebombing of Kobe.
This powerful and poignant film is regarded as a landmark achievement in Japanese animation, and a must-watch for anyone who can handle the emotional intensity. It’s a tragic but beautiful film. While an English dub was released in both 1998 (Skypilot Entertainment) and 2012 (Toho/Seraphim/Sentai), the Netflix stream is available only in the original Japanese with English subtitles.
