Twilight Out of Focus (黄昏アウトフォーカス) is a Japanese anime series adapted from the manga of the same name.

Written and illustrated by Jyanome, it follows high schoolroommates Mao Tsuchiya and Hisashi Otomo. They swear to abide by three simple rules -promises to ensure they enjoy their time together:

  1. Mao must refrain from outing Otomo as gay and having a boyfriend.
  2. Otomo must not fall in love with Mao.
  3. The two must respect each other’s privacy when one of them needs some “alone time” for self love.

As they navigate the blurred lines of friendship and desire, the second rule becomes increasingly difficult to follow. Mao’s feelings for Otomo simmer just below the surface, threatening to boil over at any moment. The tension escalates when the film club casts Otomo as the lead in their new Boys’ Love (BL) movie, with Mao as the principal photographer. As he frames each intimate scene between Otomo and his co-star, Mao’s emotions reach a fever pitch.

Otomo comforts Tsuchiya

The web of secrets and desires becomes even more intricate when Otomo’s boyfriend – his former teacher – breaks his heart (and bashes his face). Mao seizes the opportunity to comfort his vulnerable roommate, and their mutual attraction becomes impossible to ignore.

Produced by Studio Deen, Twilight Out of Focus premiered in July 2024 and is currently airing on Tokyo MX and Crunchyroll. This sultry anime has already captivated audiences with its sensual storyline, memorable characters, and catchy soundtrack.

The opening theme, “Crank Up,” performed by Ikusaburo Yamazaki, is a soulful ballad that perfectly captures the series’ emotional intensity. “I hope you can enjoy ‘Crank Up’ along with the Twilight Out of Focus anime,” Yamazaki said, “and feel the fleeting, sad moments that make this story so unforgettable.”

In contrast, the closing theme, “UnchainxUnchain,” by Amber’s, is a high-energy rock song that embodies the series’ themes of liberation and desire. “I wrote this song inspired by the promises made by Kotobuki and Mao,” Amber’s explained. “I wanted to capture the thrill of breaking free from secrets and embracing one’s true feelings.”

With its tenth episode airing this week, Twilight Out of Focus continues to weave a seductive tale of forbidden love, secrets, and self-discovery. Join the journey and indulge in this sultry anime that will leave you breathless and yearning for more.
