“Like a Prayer” is one of the most iconic songs in pop music history and is certainly one of Madonna’s most enduring works. Originally released in 1989 as the lead single from the singer’s fourth studio album of the same name, it was written and produced by both Madonna and Patrick Leonard. The song went to number 1 in more than 15 countries and received worldwide acclaim not only from fans but also from critics, journalists, and academics alike.

With its unapologetic blend of spirituality, sensuality, and female empowerment, “Like a Prayer” sparked controversy and conversation worldwide – which is exactly what art is supposed to do. Christian groups, including the Vatican, protested the broadcast of the music video, and Pepsi threatened to pull its sponsorship from the accompanying tour.
Madonna refused.
“The commercial was immediately canceled when I refused to change any scenes in the video where I was kissing a black saint or burning crosses,” Madonna said when the Pepsi commercial re-aired for the first time since its initial release at the 2023 MTV Music Video Awards. “So began my illustrious career as an artist refusing to compromise my artistic integrity. Artists are here to disturb the peace.”
“Like a Prayer” has been featured on six of Madonna’s concert tours and is one of the most frequently used Madonna songs in movies and television, most recently in Deadpool & Wolverine. Not only did Madonna give her permission to use the song, but she also offered notes on the scene where it would be used.
On August 9, a special EP of the song was released, containing not only the original 7” mix of the song but also the Battle Royale Mix and a special Choir Version – both of which were featured during pivotal moments of the film. Since the release of the film, “Like a Prayer” has been listened to over a million times a day, further solidifying Madonna’s status as a musical icon.
Available on all digital platforms, the song can also be purchased on Qobuz in uncompressed 16-Bit/44.1 kHz sound.
