There’s something magical about Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! (30-sai made Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni Nareru Rashii, 30歳まで童貞だと魔法使いになれるらしい). I first fell in love with the live-action series starring Eiji Akaso and Keita Machida as the adorable Adachi and handsome Kurosawa when it was first released for international viewing on the streaming platform Crunchyroll (though you can order the Blu-ray wherever Japanese music and movies are sold, including CDJAPAN). It was such an adorable and innocently sweet story that I couldn’t help but fall in love with it.

The general premise of the series is that if you’re a virgin when you turn 30, you obtain a magical power, and Adachi, as a 30-year-old virgin, has gained said power. Though it’s a simple kind of magic (he can read the thoughts of anyone he touches), it’s super sweet. Through this power, he learns that the most popular man in his office, Kurosawa, is in love with him.

Based on the manga of the same name, a Thai adaptation produced by GMMTV debuted in late 2023. While the series stars two of my favorites (Tay Tawan and New Thitipoom) under the entertainment powerhouse, a contract oversight pulled the series from international streaming for most of its original run. While it’s back on YouTube now (and a DVD boxset is available for pre-order through eThaiCD), while the Thai adaptation didn’t have the same magic as the original, it is still very much worth the watch.

The anime, which aired on TV Tokyo and BS TV Tokyo from 11 January—28 March 2024, has been licensed for an English dub and is available on Crunchyroll. All episodes are streaming as of 16 July. The twelve-episode series follows the Japanese series/manga events, with Daman Mills voicing Adachi and Dio Garner taking on the role of Kurosawa.

Honestly, they do an incredible job. Mills genuinely captures Adachi’s love-sick confusion with ease while Garner’s voice is a perfect fit for effortlessly sexy Kurosawa. As a whole the series is just really well produced and beautifully drawn. It also has a fantastic soundtrack. The last song in the series Magical Love (マジカルラブ) performed by the original Japanese voice actors for Adachi and Kurosawa is incredibly sweet.

Hopefully the anime will also get a home media release, because I would love to add it to my ever-growing collection. Until then, stream this (and many other) series on Crunchyroll!

There will be more anime reviews soon so…
