Masters of the Universe was one of my favorite films growing up. Not because I was a fan of the animated series (though I ADORED She-Ra: Princess of Power), but because – if I’m being honest – Dolph Lundgren was the start of my queer awakening. But even if he wasn’t he was still clad in next-to-nothing with a beautiful body and sick-ass cape.

For anyone who doesn’t know. The film starts with Skeletor (Frank Langella), the evil overlord of Snake Mountain, who has conquered Castle Greyskull with the cosmic key – a device that will allow him to travel anywhere in the universe. After he and his evil minions storm the castle, they take the Sorceress (Christina Pickles) captive. But the courageous warrior He-Man (Dolph Lundgren) finds the key’s inventor, Gwildor (Billy Barty), and discovers he has another key. Using it to enter Greyskull Heman, Man-At-Arms (Jon Cyphe) and his daughter Teela (Chelsea Field) attempt to save their beloved Sorceress, but their plans go sideways and are transported to Earth. Two teenagers, Julie (Courteney Cox – in one of her first major motion picture roles) and Kevin (Robert Duncan McNeill), find the key and become the target of Skeletor’s rage. Now it’s up to He-Man not only save Eternia, but Earth as well.

It’s cheesy, silly, and poorly produced, but I don’t care. For 37 years, it’s been the worst movie I have ever loved with all my heart. Now, Australia’s Umbrella Entertainment has released a Collector’s Edition Boxset that will allow me to relive the gloriousness of this B-rated classic over and over and over again – on Blu-ray!

Again, it’s not a great film, and EVERYONE knows it was a commercial flop, but it entered my life at a very specific and poignant time. For that reason I will ALWAYS love it – and I am grateful for Umbrella for giving it the boxset treatment. And apparently I am not the only one. The initial run of the Collector’s Edition is already sold out. However, the standard edition (non-slipcase) is still up for pre-order on the official Umbrella Entertainment Shop.

More film reviews soon so…
