In the late 90s, JIVE records boasted some of the biggest names in pop music, Nysnc, Aaron Carter, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, and Steps. They had all of the artists I was listening to, including Don Philip – a Miami native with an incredible voice and looks to match. With deep dark eyes, tousled hair, and a mischievous smile against the face of an angel and the body of a Greek God, Philip was the perfect package.

First appearing with Britney Spears on the duet “I Will Still Love You” from her multi-platinum debut album … Baby One More Time. After the success of the album, it was announced that Philip would get a release of his own in the form of a self-titled debut album.

In preparation for the album, Philip released two singles. The First, “Sugar” which sampled the Jackson 5 classic “I Want You Back” and was featured in the Melissa Joan Hart lead feature Drive Me Crazy.

A second second single “You Make Me Love You” followed soon after.

However, while the singles were poppy and enjoyable, the album was not released in the states (though it was in Canada) and in Asian territories like Japan, Thailand, and Taiwan.

With 15 tracks, the album clocks in at just over 51 minutes and, though it’s a product of its time – it’s an enjoyable one. In addition to the two singles some of the highlights include: “I Don’t Like You Anymore” – which is a great showcase of Phillips range and the power behind his voice. “Keep My Heart In Mind” – a typical millennium pop track that’s catchy and fun and again, utilities Phillip’s range. “I Don’t Like You Anymore” and “The Way Of The World Of You And Me” are also strangely addictive.

All-in-all it’s actually a pretty solid album and a great piece of nostalgia if you’re missing the sugar-sweet synths of millennium pop.

Philip has continued to make music – and still has a spectacular voice. He’s also one of the sweetest men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
