The music of Sailor Moon is such a significant part of my nostalgia. DiC did fans dirty in a lot of ways when it came to censoring and queer representation, but the music was spot-on from the start. The songs were catchy and fun, and many are still really wonderful to listen to – almost thirty years since the series’ release. The Final (officially released) soundtrack, The Full Moon Collection, captured that nostalgia in a bright and beautiful way.

Released on 12 November 2022, the CD soundtrack was distributed through DiC Tune-Time Audio and KOCH records. A “Greatest Hits” style compilation with a twist that consisted of some of the series most popular songs, remixes, and additional background music not included in the previous releases.

Jennifer Cihi returned in the singing voice of Sailor Moon / Serena, with Ronald Wasserman as Tuxedo Mask / Darien. Sandy Howell and Patricia Tollett also return as Sailor Mars / Rei and Sailor Jupiter / Lita, respectively.

The album opens strong with the instrumental piece of the “Pan Flue” song Alan played during the Doom Tree arc. While not quite as iconic as the Star Locket Theme, it’s still a gorgeous piece of music. The album then seaways into a remix of the English-language theme song.

This album’s only new vocal track is “I’m Not Ready,” written by Melanie Anne and Ronald Wasserman, and features Howell and Wasserman on vocals. Though the song was never featured in the anime or any English dubs of the films, it’s still a fun piece of music.

My favorite song on the album is the remix of “My Only Love.” It’s my favorite song from the first soundtrack and just a gorgeous piece of music.

There is also a Hi-NRG Mix of the Beetles’ hit “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and the RAWer Remix of “I Want Someone To Love”

Beyond those tracks, the rest is background music and previous released tracks like “The Power of Love” and “Rainy Day Man.” Though the album does end with an extended “Club Mix” of the theme song.

After the second season and Third film, Sailor Moon Super S – The Movie: Black Dream Hole, Cloverway Inc., Toei’s international branch, took over. While some of the aspects of the series remained more faithful to the original Japanese, the fact that they turned Uranus and Neptune into cousins rather than lovers was just creepy. They also changed up the music producers and replaced the voice actors portraying them. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a soundtrack release for the Cloverway portion of anime.

Long out of print, the CD can still be found on second hand sites like eBay and Discogs.

There will be more Sailor Moon Music reviews soon so…
