When it comes to Studio Ghibli I am almost always pleasantly surprised. Their films are so vibrant and just fun to watch. Though not a film, On Your Mark, is a such an interesting part of the Ghibli library.
A song by the Japanese rock duo Chage & Aska, the studio produced the music video as part of the Ghibli Experimental Theater project. Released as an opener to their 1995 feature film Whisper of the Heart, the video clocks in at just under 7 minutes and has absolutely no dialog.

The story centers around two police officers who find a winged woman who’s being held captive. She trades one prison for another when scientists come in and swoop her away for experimentation. The video is of the police offers rescuing her over and over again until they are finally able to set her free and she flies up into the heavens.
As short as it is, it’s a very interesting and visually engaging story, which is something Miyazaki does better than almost any else (sorry Disney). My one disappointment with this short is that it’s just a short. I would love to see this adapted into a full-fledged feature.
More Studio Ghibli soon so…
