The Wizard of Oz is one of those movies that I’ve returned hundreds of times. It was, and remains, an annual television tradition that has captivated the world over for generations. I still remember sitting on my mother’s knee telling her that Wicked Witch of the West “Needs a spanking” because she was so naughty. The magic of the way Dorothy’s world went from sepia to brilliant color, has been one of my favorite moments in any motion picture, and Over the Rainbow still brings me to tears.

I’ve always identified with Dorothy. Curious and strong-willed, she wanted more than was offered to her. Running away from home, she found herself in a new world where she didn’t know a single soul, but still, she wasn’t afraid. Even in the face of the ultimate adversity, she didn’t get up, not until she was able to get home. While returning home is not my endgame, I do understand her drive to get what she wants. I’m the way.

I’ve seen the film so many times I could quote it line by line, matching each character’s tone and inflection, and no matter how many times I watch it, it never gets old. It’s one of my favorite films to watch during the holidays because it reminds me of those I’ve lost. It always makes me smile.

More Retro films soon so…
