Every so often a series comes along that just demands to be watched. No matter how many times you say “Just one more episode” the curiosity burning inside you to continue forces you to press on – and before you know it you’ve binged the entire thing in one sitting.

The Horror of Delores Roach is one such series.

After serving 16 in prison for a crime she was framed for, Dolores Roach (Justina Machado!) returns home in Washington Heights, which has been gentrified, into a world she no longer recognizes. Unsure of what to do, or even where she’s going to sleep that night,  she reunites with an old stoner friend, Luis (Alejandro Hernandez), who lets her live and work as a masseuse in the basement under his empanada shop, Empanada Loca. When the promise of her newfound stability is threatened, she must go to extremes to survive

Hernandez and Machado as Luis and Delores

Think working girl meets Sweeny Todd. It’s an incredibly well-written series, and Justina Machado, who plays the murderous heroine Delores, is a tour-de-force! She is an incredible actress, with amazing range – she can make you cry, make you laugh, and make you gasp in shock and surprise all within the span of about 3 seconds.

Based on a podcast / one woman play created by Aaron Mark, the series also features Kita Updike as Nellie, who runs the cash register at  Empanada Loca and the iconic Cyndi Lauper as a PI.

All eight episodes are currently streaming on PRIME.
