For their latest YouTube track “LAI-LA-LA,” the colorful septet Naniwa Danshi has decided to turn down the lights and tone down the cuteness and instead turn up the volume and turn on the sex appeal. With the title a call-out to the “Light My Fire” lyrics, that’s exactly what the guys have done….
As the second song released digitally in the run-up to their second album POPMALL (Releasing 12 July) the group has really shown just how much they’ve matured in the year and a half since their debut. The song, a club-anthem in the making, is techno pop at its catchiest. As usual, watching them move is near-hypnotic. Sexy and in-sync, they’re one of those groups who give 100% percent into whatever they’re doing and it shows.
Vocally, Shunsuke Michieda opens the song, sounding sensual and sweet. Every single one of the guys gets their time to shine, and while they all stand out on their own. It’s magic when they harmonize. Group leader Kazuya Ohashi shows off the power of his voice, with some sic riffs while even the normally innocently sweet voice of Ryusei Onishi is twinged with sexuality.
I love the dark tones of the costumes, it’s chic, slick, and sexy. Normally the ones with the biggest smiles, there’s something about seeing Joichiro Fujiwara and Daigo Nishihata dressed in leather. And Takahashi Kyohei and Kento Nagao seem to enjoy teasing their sensual side too.
If I’m being honest, one of my favorite parts of the video is at the very beginning. A Tiffany fan (who is very uncoordinated) I’m a big fan of hand-dancing – and the guys somehow even managed to make that look sexy.
