The supernatural Drama, My Love from the Star (별에서 온 그대) is one of my absolute favorites. It’s one of those series I return to at least once a year. Written by Park Ji-Eun and directed by Jang Tae-you, it’s one of the best series I’ve ever seen.

Kim Soo-Hyun leads as Do Min-Joon, an alien who came to Earth during gate Joseon Dynasty. Curious about the planet, he ends up saving a young girl, Seo Yi-Hwa, from falling off a cliff. The act, however, sets into motion a series of events that leads to Min-Joon being left behind when his comrades return to their own planet.
So, he spends the next four centuries trying to blend in. He’s good-looking, quick-witted, and intelligent. He also has enhanced physical abilities that heighten his vision and hearing and give him incredible speed – think Superman without the flight or tights. Because of his alien DNA, he never ages and, as such, is forced to take on a new identity every ten years. He has worked as a doctor, an astronomer, a lawyer, and a banker and is now working as a college professor.
Enter Jun Ji-hyun as as actress Cheon Song-yi. Though very beautiful, she’s not the brightest bulb in the batch – which often leads to hysterical interactions on Social Media with fans and news outlets. It’s one of these faux that sends her to the university and one of the classes taught by Min-Joon. The two turn each other’s world upside down, and it’s revealed that Cheon Song-Yi is the reincarnation of Seo Yi-Hwa.
The two embark on a tenuous and often hysterical romance that blossoms over the series’ 21 episodes. One of my absolute favorite moments of any series is after Song-yi’s younger brother, Yoon-Jae (Ahn Jae-Hyun) when finds out Min-Joon is alienated and wants to touch his fingertip to his 1982 theatrical hit E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Mortified, Min-Joon shakes his head and says, “I don’t do that.” Eventually, he gives in to Yoon-Jae, and as the E.T. Theme swells, they touch tough fingertips. It’s hysterical.

With its supernatural Romanic theme mixed with comedy and a murder subplot, the series has everything. After winning numerous awards, the series has inspired remakes in the Philippines, Thailand, and Japan. While each one has its own merit, there’s just something magical about the original – a large part of which is due to the absolutely stunning cast.
My Love from the Star can currently be streamed on the Viki app.
