Before BTS, Before New Jeans, Before Stray Kids, and OnlyOneOf, eight young women dominated the charts and brought K-POP “Into the New World.” And they are called Girls’ Generation!

A creation of SM Entertainment Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun was unlike anything I had ever seen before. As a twenty-something-year-old gay man, fresh off the prairies of Montana, I was captivated by their colorful style and candy-coated song lyrics. Their music videos were more than just visuals to support their albums; they were chapters of a story that continued with each video. Case in point: Their chart-topping Bubble-Gum single “Oh!” lea directly into their sultry third album “Run Devil Run” (a 2010 repackaging of Oh!).

The story was continued in the group’s 2022 release Forever 1, in which the album’s fifth track, “You Better Run,” lyrically being about “a main character who returns from their 2010 single “Run Devil Run” to run amok.

They are brilliant.
